Alert #07-508

Trane Recalls Air Conditioners after Incidents of Units Smoking

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC.

Name of Product: PTEE and PTHE Series Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs)

Units: About 10,580

Distributor: The Trane Co., of Piscataway, N.J.

Manufacturer: Qingdao Haier Air Conditioner, of Qingdao, China.

Hazard: The heating element on these commercially installed units can become displaced and, if it contacts metal, could short circuit. If the electric heater on one of those units short-circuits, wiring problems on 265 volt models could allow the unit to remain energized while the unit’s fan is turned off, causing it to overheat and smoke.

Incidents/Injuries: Individuals installing units observed smoking and smelled a burning odor in three units during installation testing procedures. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall includes 208, 230 and 265 volt models of the Trane PTEE and PTHE Series Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs). They were manufactured from about March 2006 through July 2006. The date code is F06C through F06G, and is written on the unit’s Manufacturer’s Data Plate located behind the molded plastic cover above the power connection.

The units have the following model numbers, also written on the Manufacturer’s Data Plate:

PTEE0701UAA PTEE1501UAA PTHE0902UAA
PTEE0702UAA PTEE1502UAA PTHE1201UAA
PTEE0901UAA PTHE0701UAA PTHE1202UAA
PTEE0902UAA PTHE0702UAA PTHE1501UAA
PTEE1201UAA PTHE0901UAA PTHE1502UAA
PTEE1202UAA

Sold at: Trane distributors sold the recalled units to commercial customers for use in locations such as hotels and office buildings from May 2006 to July 2006.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: The power connectors are being rewired or replaced, and the heaters will be visually inspected and replaced as necessary in the 265 volt models. Although there have been no incidents with the 208 volt and 230 volt models, Trane is still inspecting these units as a precaution. Trane has contacted the affected customers directly.

Contact: For more information, contact Trane at (800)235-2152 or at (931) 648-5047, between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or write an email to buddy.sholar@trane.com

CPSC, Goodman Company, L.P. Announce Recall of Amana, Trane, and American Standard Brand Package Terminal Air Conditioners/Heat Pumps

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below.

Name of product: Package Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (PTAC)

Units: About 875,000

Manufacturer: Goodman Company, L.P., of Houston, Texas

Hazard: Fire hazard resulting from this chain of events: filter becomes clogged due to lack of maintenance, severely restricting airflow and resulting in elevated internal temperature; this may cause two safety switches to stop working during the product’s expected life; if the blower wheel then stops when the product is operated in the heating mode, a fire hazard can develop.

Incidents/Injuries: Goodman received 29 confirmed reports of units overheating, including eight instances where the PTAC ignited and, in some cases, caused minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: These PTACs are owned mainly by commercial and institutional organizations and are used in the lodging industry, apartments, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, schools, and government buildings. A small number of the recalled units are owned by individual homeowners. The PTACs are beige in color and are intended for through-the-wall installation. Goodman manufactured all of the recalled units, which were sold under the Amana, Trane, and American Standard brand names. Goodman and Trane/American Standard are separate, unrelated entities. The recalled PTACs consist of Amana brand units manufactured from January 1996 through March 2003, and Trane and American Standard brand units manufactured from January 1996 through August 2002, that use electric heaters rated at 3.5 kilowatts (kW) or greater.

Brand Name Serial and Model Numbers

The serial and model numbers are below the operating controls under the front cover assembly. To check the serial and model numbers, remove the front cover by pulling it from the bottom straight out until the clips release, then lifting it up. For some units, it is first necessary to remove two ¼” screws (in the filter compartment) that secure the front cover.

Sold to: Amana, Trane, and American Standard representatives sold the PTACs to hotels/motels, hospitals, assisted living facilities, schools, and apartment complexes. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning distributors and resellers sold the units to commercial customers and, in some cases, homeowners. The recalled units were sold throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada between January 1996 and March 2003.

2997Y20457 to 2997Y20656

The model and serial numbers are located on the top of the plastic evaporator scroll behind the unit's front plastic grill. "Carrier" is written on the front of these units.

The Carrier Guam store in Tamuning, Guam, sold these air conditioners from October 1995 through July 1997 for about $380.
