Backpack Blowers Recalled by Homelite Due to Fire Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Homelite Backpack Blowers Units: About 85,000 Distributor: Homelite Consumer Products Inc., of Anderson, S.C. Hazard: The fuel tank can leak gasoline, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Homelite has received 18 reports of fuel tanks leaking gasoline including one report of minor skin irritation. Description: This recall involves the Homelite Mighty Lite backpack blowers. The blowers are red and black. The following models are affected by this recall: The model number and manufacturing date code are printed on the blower’s data label which is located on the red plastic housing above the choke knob and adjacent to the fuel tank. Products with a green “dot” on the outside of the package or the letters “CA” embossed on the fuel tank are not included in the recall. Sold at: Home Depot stores and various retailers of refurbished products including Direct Tools Factory Outlets, CPO Homelite, Gardner, Tap Enterprises, Isla Supply and Heartland America stores nationwide from September 2007 through October 2009 for between $90 and $140. The Toro Company Reannounces Recall of Electric Blowers Due to Projectile Hazards WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Toro Power Sweep Electric Blowers Units: About 900,000 Manufacturer: The Toro Company, of Bloomington, Minn. Hazard: The blower’s impeller, which is a rotating component on the blower, can break, resulting in pieces of plastic flying out of the blower. This poses a risk of serious injury to the user or a bystander. Incidents/Injuries: Toro has received 162 reports of broken impellers, including 28 reports of minor cuts and bruises resulting from projected impeller pieces. Description: The recall involves Toro Power Sweep electric blower model 51586 that was manufactured between 2000 and 2002. The recalled units have serial numbers that range between 000055100 and 220255609. There are two decals on the main housing of the blower. One decal reads, “TORO Power Sweep” and the decal on the opposite side of the blower contains the model number and serial number (shown by the letter “A” in the picture below). The recalled units can be identified by a black impeller fan, which can be seen through the air inlet screen on the bottom of the unit. Sold through: Toro dealers and various mass retailers nationwide including The Home Depot, Lowes, Target and K-Mart stores from January 2000 through late December 2002 for about $32. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Shindaiwa Backpack Blowers Units: About 23,000 Importer: Shindaiwa Corp., of Tualatin, Ore Manufacturer: Shindaiwa Kogyo Co. Ltd, of Hiroshima, Japan Hazard: The blower’s impeller (fan) can separate from the base and break apart, causing plastic pieces to be blown out of the machine, and pose a laceration and impact hazard to consumers. The flying pieces also can cause property damage and injury to bystanders. Note: These backpack blowers were previously recalled due to a fire hazard. Incidents/Injuries: Shindaiwa is aware of 13 incidents involving broken impellers. One incident involved a minor head injury and minor property damage to a nearby automobile. Description: This recall involves Shindaiwa Models EB8510 and EB8510RT. All models up to serial # 7014728 are included. The backpack blowers weigh approximately 24 pounds and include Serial Numbers through February 2007 production (S/N 702XXXX) which are located on the side label. These machines are black and blue with a red and black label that reads, “EB8510, Shindaiwa.” Sold by: Shindaiwa dealers nationwide from September 2005 through January 2007 for about $600. Name of Product: Shindaiwa Backpack Blowers Units: About 22,000 Importer: Shindaiwa Inc., Tualatin, Oregon Hazard: The muffler’s outer shell can melt allowing exhaust gas to exit from the bottom or back side of the muffler. The exhaust gas may cause damage to the fuel tank creating a possible fire hazard for the user. Incidents/Injuries: Shindaiwa is aware of one incident where a small muffler fire was involved with no property damage and no injuries. Description: This recall involves Shindaiwa Models EB8510 and EB8510RT. All models up to serial #7025018 are included. After serial number 7025018, the leaf blower has been upgraded with stainless steel muffler shells. The backpack blowers weight approximately 24 pounds and include Serial Numbers through February 2007 production (S/N 702XXXX) which are located on the side label. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Products: Black & Decker BV4000 Type 1 Blower/Vacs Units: About 272,000 Manufacturer: Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc., of Towson, Md. Hazard: A loose connection between the blower/vac and an extension cord can cause overheating, posing a fire hazard. Incidents/Injuries: Black & Decker has received 187 reports of smoking, melting and/or fire near the blower/vac's plug, including one report of a fire extending beyond the unit. Black & Decker has received seven reports of minor burns, none of which required medical treatment. Description and Models: This recall involves Black & Decker model BV4000 Type 1 blower/vacs. The model and type number are printed on a name plate on the right side of the unit. The blower/vacs have an orange housing and a black blower assembly. Sold at: Home center, hardware and discount stores nationwide from April 2004 through July 2005 for about $70. Name of Product: RedMax Gas-Powered Backpack Blowers Units: About 170,000 Importer: Komatsu Zenoah America, doing business as RedMax, of Norcross, Ga. Hazard: The muffler support bracket can break, creating an opening in the muffler body. Hot exhaust gases can then escape from the muffler and could melt the fuel tank or ignite grease, oil or debris around the fuel tank, posing a fire hazard. Incidents/Injuries: RedMax has received five reports of units that have caught fire when hot exhaust gases from damaged mufflers ignited grease, oil or debris around the area of the fuel tank. No injuries have been reported. Description: The RedMax gasoline-powered backpack blowers are red and black with a white fuel tank. Model numbers EB6200, EB7000, EB7001, and EB7001RH can be found on the body of the blowers along with "RedMax," "Zenoah," and "Komatsu." Sold by: RedMax dealers nationwide from December 1996 through December 2005 for about $530 Manufactured In: Japan and Georgia Remedy: Consumers should stop using the backpack blowers immediately and contact RedMax for a dealer location nearest to them to schedule a free inspection and a free repair if necessary. Leaf Blowers Sold at Home Depot Recalled for Laceration Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Homelite Vac Attack II Blower Units: About 1,550 Importer: Homelite Consumer Products Inc., of Anderson, S.C. Hazard: The blowers are missing the doors covering the vacuum inlet. This exposes the blower's fan blade, posing a risk of finger laceration to the user. Incidents/Injuries: No incidents or injuries have been reported. Description: The recalled blower is used outside to blow, vacuum or mulch leaves. "Homelite" is printed on the top of the blower. The blower is red with a black nozzle, and weighs about 10 lbs. Model number UT08542 or UT08542A is printed on the operator's manual. Only blowers missing the black cover over the fan are included in the recall. "Homelite" and "Vac Attack II" are written on the fan cover. A bag connects to the blower to collect the leaves or mulch. Sold at: Home Depot stores nationwide from September 2005 through November 2005 for about $99. Manufactured in: China Remedy: Consumers should stop using these blowers immediately and return them to a Home Depot store for a new blower or a full refund. Name of Product: BR 500 and BR 550 Backpack Blowers Units: About 6,230 Manufacturer: Stihl Inc. of Virginia Beach, Va. Hazard: The fan wheel on these backpack blowers could break, resulting in pieces of plastic flying out of the blower housing. This poses a risk of injury to the user or a bystander. Incidents/Injuries: Stihl has received five reports of the fan wheel breaking. No injuries have been reported. Description: These backpack blowers have serial numbers ranging from 264264925 through 264740832 which are located on top of the engine's cylinder on the fin. The spark plug boot can be removed to view the serial number from the exterior of the blower. Sold at: Authorized Stihl dealers nationwide from January 2005 through May 2005 for about $450. Manufactured in: U.S.A. Remedy: Consumers should stop using these blowers immediately and return them to an authorized Stihl dealer for a free repair. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of product: Echo-brand grass trimmers, brush cutters, hedge clippers, power blowers and power edgers Units: About 540,000 Manufacturer/Importer: Echo Inc., of Lake Zurich, Ill. Hazard: The fuel lines on these tools can develop an "alligator surface" appearance which could develop into a condition that will allow leakage of gasoline and fuel vapor, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Echo has received three reports of fuel leakage with no reported injuries or property damage. Description: The specific gas-powered tools involved are identified by the model and serial numbers on the following chart. The model number and serial number is written on the name plate on each product.
Sold at: Home Depot, home centers, hardware stores, and power equipment dealers nationwide from February 2003 to May 2004 for between $149 and $300.
