Trimmers/Brushcutters Recalled by STIHL Incorporated Due to Injury Hazard The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: STIHL FS 310 Bike Handle Trimmer/Brushcutter Units: About 1,000 Manufacturer: STIHL Incorporated, of Virginia Beach, Va. Hazard: Vibration from the ignition module may cause the trimmer head to loosen and detach from the mounting, posing an injury hazard. Incidents/Injuries: The company received three reports of incidents and no reports of injuries. Description: The recalled bike handle trimmer/brushcutter has "STIHL" printed on the engine head. The model number FS 310 is located in two places, on the shaft and on the flywheel housing below the starter grip. This recall includes all units with serial numbers ranging from 27961 1030 through 27961 1119 and 27984 3607 through 27984 4556, which can be found on an adhesive label affixed to the bottom of the fuel tank and etched into the metal frame on the bottom of the engine. Sold at: Authorized STIHL dealers nationwide from June 2009 to April 2010 for about $550. Manufactured in: United States Remedy: STIHL informed purchasers for whom they had addresses directly by letter after April 15, 2010. Consumers should stop using this trimmer/brushcutter immediately and take it to an authorized STIHL dealer for a new ignition module, which will be installed at no cost to the consumer. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of product: Echo-brand grass trimmers, brush cutters, hedge clippers, power blowers and power edgers Units: About 540,000 Manufacturer/Importer: Echo Inc., of Lake Zurich, Ill. Hazard: The fuel lines on these tools can develop an "alligator surface" appearance which could develop into a condition that will allow leakage of gasoline and fuel vapor, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Echo has received three reports of fuel leakage with no reported injuries or property damage. Description: The specific gas-powered tools involved are identified by the model and serial numbers on the following chart. The model number and serial number is written on the name plate on each product.
Sold at: Home Depot, home centers, hardware stores, and power equipment dealers nationwide from February 2003 to May 2004 for between $149 and $300. Manufactured in: United States Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled tools immediately and contact an Echo dealer for a free repair. CPSC, Bachtold Brothers Inc. Announce Recall of Brush Cutters WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of product: Weed and Brush Cutters Units: 63,600 Manufacturer: Bachtold Brothers Inc., of Gibson City, Ill. Hazard: The operator can come in contact with the rotating blade, even when disengaged, by pulling on the front of the mower deck while the engine is running, posing a serious injury hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: The company has received eight reports of laceration injuries. Description: The recalled Weed and Brush Cutters have an orange or green body and include the W-24 models, sold under the Bachtold Whipper, DR Field & Brush Mower, and B-800 (with a 77-100 deck) brand names. The brand name is printed on the drive box between the engine and the left wheel. DR All-Terrain Field & Brush mowers manufactured by Country Home Products are not included in this recall. Sold through: The brush cutters were sold through Country Home Products' catalogues, as well as independent distributors nationwide, from January 1978 through April 2001 for between $950 and $1,600. Manufactured in: United States. Remedy: Consumers should stop using the units immediately and contact Bachtold if you have the Whipper or B-800 models or contact Country Home Products if you have the DR Field & Brush model to receive a free repair kit. The repair involves the installation of a mechanism that will shut down the engine if and when the operator takes his/her hands off the handlebar.
