Increasing Injuries Prompt Black & Decker to Reannounce Recall of Trimmers/Edgers Due to Laceration and Burn Hazards WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edgers Units: About 200,000 Manufacturer: Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc., of Towson, Md. Hazard: The trimmer/edger’s spool, spool cap and pieces of trimmer string can come loose during use and become airborne projectiles, posing a serious laceration hazard to the user, as well as bystanders. The trimmer/edgers can also overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: At the time of the original announcement in July 2007, Black & Decker had received more than 700 reports of incidents, including 58 reports of injuries. The firm has received over 100 additional injury reports; ten that required medical attention and minor injuries such as bruises and lacerations. There were also reports of minor property damage, including broken windows. Description: The Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmers/Edgers are electric-powered. Trimmer/edgers with date codes 200546 through 200645 (representing manufacture dates of November 14, 2005 through November 6, 2006) are included in this recall. The date code is located on the underside of the trimmer/edger’s handle. Only trimmers with black spool caps are included in the recall. Those with orange spool caps are not included in the recall. Sold at: Major home center and hardware stores nationwide from November 2005 through January 2007 for about $70. Manufactured in: China Remedy: Consumers should stop using the string trimmers/edgers immediately and contact Black & Decker for a free repair kit. Hazard: The trimmer/edger's spool, spool cap and pieces of trimmer string can come loose during use and become airborne projectiles, posing a laceration hazard to the user as well as bystanders. The trimmer/edgers can also overheat posing a burn hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Black & Decker has received 707 reports of incidents, including 58 reports of injuries. Serious injuries included cuts to two consumers' legs that required medical attention. Minor injuries included bruises, lacerations, and facial injuries such as a welt and broken skin over a consumer's eye. There were also reports of property damage, including two broken windows. Description: The Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmers/Edgers are electric-powered. Trimmer/edgers with date codes 200546 through 200645 (representing manufacture dates of November 14, 2005 through November 6, 2006) are included in this recall. CPSC, Stihl Inc. Announce Recall of Multi-Task Tools WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of product: KombiSystem Multi-Task Tool Units: About 45,000 Manufacturer: Stihl Inc., of Virginia Beach, Va. Hazard: An internal clip may become dislodged and as a result, the clutch shoes could be projected from the clutch housing and strike consumers, posing the risk of injury. Incidents/Injuries: Stihl has received no reports of incidents. Description: The recalled product is a KombiSystem Multi-Task Tool powerhead, Models KM55, KM55R, KM55RC, FS55T or FS55RT. The recalled models, which have "Stihl" printed on the engine head, have serial numbers lower than 263868001 which can be found on the engine head. The product is a powerhead that can be fitted with attachments for a variety of tasks, including edging, trimming and sweeping. Sold at: Authorized Stihl dealers for between $180 and $210. The FS models were sold between October 2001 and October 2002 and the KM models were sold between September 2002 and October 2004. Manufactured in: United States. Remedy: Consumers should stop using this multi-task tool immediately and return it to an authorized Stihl dealer for a free repair. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of product: Echo-brand grass trimmers, brush cutters, hedge clippers, power blowers and power edgers Units: About 540,000 Manufacturer/Importer: Echo Inc., of Lake Zurich, Ill. Hazard: The fuel lines on these tools can develop an "alligator surface" appearance which could develop into a condition that will allow leakage of gasoline and fuel vapor, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Echo has received three reports of fuel leakage with no reported injuries or property damage. Description: The specific gas-powered tools involved are identified by the model and serial numbers on the following chart. The model number and serial number is written on the name plate on each product.
Sold at: Home Depot, home centers, hardware stores, and power equipment dealers nationwide from February 2003 to May 2004 for between $149 and $300. Manufactured in: United States Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled tools immediately and contact an Echo dealer for a free repair. CPSC, Sears Announce Recall of Electric Chain Saws and Electric Edgers
PRODUCT: Chainsaws and Electric Edgers - Sears, Roebuck and Co. of Hoffman Estates, Ill. is voluntarily recalling about 7,100 electric chain saws and electric edgers . Both the Sears Craftsman 14" electric chainsaw, model number 358.34114 and the Sears Craftsman electric grass edger, model number 358.79650 are included in this recall. Sears retail and hardware stores sold the electric chain saws and edgers from August 15, 2001 through August 30, 2001. PROBLEM: The plug at the end of the power cord of the chain saw and the edger may have exposed copper wires presenting a possible electrocution hazard to consumers. INCIDENTS/INJURIES: None reported. WHAT TO DO: Consumers should stop using these recalled chainsaws and edgers immediately and check the date codes. The chain saw date code label can be found on the back of the motor housing in the lower left corner of the warning label and follows the words "Serial No." Only chain saws with the date code 01227, 01228, 01229, 01230, 01231, 01232, 01233, 01234, 01235 are included in this recall. The edger date code label is located on the warning label on the shaft and follows the words "Serial No.," which is near the UL logo. Only electric edgers with the date code 01234 or 01235 are included in the recall. Consumers should stop using the recalled chainsaws and edgers immediately and return it to the local Sears store where purchased for a replacement.
