Spring is here which means it’s time to pull the lawn mower out and get ready for the grass cutting season. With these easy maintenance tips your lawn mower will run like new, last longer, and keep your lawn looking its best.

Giving your lawn mower engine a tune-up at the beginning of the season is essential to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. A basic tune-up involves changing the air filter, oil, oil filter (if equipped), and spark plug. Most engine models have a maintenance kit available that contains everything you need. You will need to find the engine model number, which is separate from the lawn mower model number, to find the correct kit.

Gasoline only stays fresh for about 30 days, so if there is gas left in your lawn mower from last season drain it out and fill the tank with fresh gas. Stale gas turns gummy and leaves deposits in the carburetor and fuel lines which affect engine performance. To keep gas fresh for up to one year, use a fuel stabilizer at fill up.

Bent, unbalanced or dull lawn mower blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly and evenly, which can leave your lawn looking unhealthy. Blades can be sharpened and balanced several times, but manufacturers recommend replacing your lawn mower blade every 1-3 years to ensure a healthy, clean cut.
