Holiday cooking can be very stressful when you are trying to present the perfect meal, on time, for the entire family. The last thing you need is an oven that doesn’t work properly. To avoid holiday cooking disasters and save yourself a little stress, follow these helpful tips to make sure your range or oven is in perfect condition for the holidays.

If you have a self-cleaning oven, clean it at least two weeks before the holidays. This feature heats the interior of the oven to a very high temperature to incinerate any residue inside the oven. Occasionally, the high heat of the self-cleaning function may damage the thermal fuse, door latch, or control board. Cleaning the oven well ahead of time will give you time to complete any needed repairs. Do not use oven-cleaning products in self-cleaning ovens.

During the bake cycle, it is normal for the oven temperature to fluctuate up and down in an even pattern to achieve an average temperature for the control setting. Preheat your oven for 15 minutes then use an oven thermometer to check the temperature. Do not open the oven door during the test or it will alter the results. If the temperature inside the oven is off by 30 degrees or more, you may have a faulty oven sensor, thermostat, or control board. Is your oven taking longer than usual to bake? If you have a gas oven, it may have a weak bake igniter. If your oven is electric, then it may have a burned-out bake element.
