Appliance shape up tips

Whew! The holidays are over, and now it's time to whip those appliances back into shape. Here are some things you may want to check:
Range/Stove/Oven
Burned on gravy spills are difficult, sometimes impossible, to get off burners and drip pans. Consider replacing yours with new ones to make your stove look new again. Use the PartDetective to find the exact drip pans and burners for your model.
Refrigerator
If you're like most people, a quick peek in your refrigerator shows exactly what you served for holiday dinners - even after you've tossed the leftovers. Perhaps a smidge of pumpkin pie remains caked on the door seal or some cranberry sauce dripped onto a shelf. Regardless of the story your refrigerator tells, now's a good time to clean it before anything leaks into the insulation and causes a bad odor.
A little soapy water will do the trick, and use a toothbrush to get at all the nooks and crannies of the door seal. If the seal looks dry and cracked, you might want to replace it to ensure continued cooling efficiency. To reduce odors, RepairClinic.com suggests Fridge Aid, a high-quality activated charcoal air filter.
Dishwasher
Are your dishes not getting as clean as they were before the holidays? Check to see if the unit is filling with enough water for each cycle. If not, replacing the water inlet valve may fix this problem and get your dishes sparkling clean again. To find the right water inlet valve for your model, use the PartDetective.
To help prevent floor damage, RepairClinic.com sells a unique type of dishwasher mat that diverts any leaking water to the front of the unit. That way, you'll see when there's a leak right away and will have plenty of time to make a repair before standing water damages your floor. Check it out here.
Dryer
If you're drying comforters and sheets now that holiday guests are gone, be sure to clean the vent leading to the outside of the house. It will reduce drying times and the risk of fire. RepairClinic.com offers two sizes of dryer vent brushes to make this task a snap:
10 foot dryer vent brush
20 foot dryer vent brush
Washer
Just as frozen pipes can cause a small flood in your house, cracked and brittle rubber washing machine hoses can burst and cause a mess. Replace them with stainless steel hoses for increased durability and peace of mind.
Garbage Disposer
Now that the last of the fruitcake has been safely ground up, it's time to freshen up the disposer. Grind a half-lemon in the disposer to reduce odors or use Disposer Care to clean and deodorize.

Oven doors can be tempting jungle gyms for little ones. Make sure yours has an anti-tip bracket installed to prevent the unit from tipping over on an overzealous toddler. The bracket is mounted to a wood plate on the bottom of your wall with screws, and then the leg of your stove actually slides underneath it when you slide the unit back in place. That way, no matter how much pressure you put on the front, it can't pull up or tip over. But you can still slide the stove out if you have to work on it. Manufacturers now include anti-tip brackets with all models. So if yours doesn't have one and you can't find it, call the manufacturer and ask them to send one. Or you can purchase one from us for just few dollars. Use the PartDetective to find the right bracket for your model.
