RepairClinic.com Regular Troubleshoots Oven in Time to Bake Hobby Horse Cake

Meg A., Midland, Texas

For decades, Meg's family has carried on a special tradition: When each child turns one, someone in the family bakes him or her a hobby-horse cake for their first birthday. This was once Meg's mom's job; now Meg is the family baker.

Just as Meg was planning to bake the traditional cake for her great-niece's first birthday, her oven began acting up.

"I would set the temperature, but it would go way up or way down," she said. "I was going to have to borrow someone else's oven to make the cake.'"

Just two days before the party, Meg called the local store where she had originally purchased her oven. The store could get the part, but it would take at least five days and cost about $150.

With no time to lose, Meg turned to a trusty resource she had relied on before - RepairClinic.com®. A regular do-it-yourselfer, Meg had visited the site previously for a washing machine problem.

How Did She Do It?

Problem: Oven not maintaining the proper temperature

What led her to RepairClinic.com: Meg had previously found RepairClinic.com® on Yahoo after doing a search for "washing machine repair." This time she went straight to the website

How she diagnosed the problem:
Emailed the RepairGuru® her specific problem along with her brand and model number

How he fixed it:
Pulled the oven away from the wall
Removed both the outer and inner covers
Replaced the sensor using instructions included with the part
Put covers back on

Part needed:
An oven temperature sensor

Tools used:

Screwdriver and nut driver

Total time for repair:
20 Minutes

"She emailed the RepairGuru® her specific problem, brand and model number. She quickly received a response with the diagnosis and the part she needed - an oven temperature sensor.

She ordered the part on a Thursday evening with rush shipping. By the time she returned home from work on Friday, the part was on her doorstep.

Using the instructions that accompanied the part, Meg began by pulling the oven away from the wall. She removed the back of the appliance, and then the cover inside in order to reach the sensor. She replaced the temperature sensor and put the inner and outer oven covers back on.

In just 20 minutes, she was back in business and on to the next important project - baking the cake for the birthday party the following day.

On RepairClinic.com®, the oven sensor cost less than half what it the local shop would have charged-even with rush shipping. And, by doing the repair herself, Meg saved another $100. More importantly, she had time to bake the cake.

"I was so pleased with how quickly RepairClinic got back to me," she said. "And there's no charge for the information they give you. That's a lot more help than I can get from the local parts store."

Two Tips to Try This Month

Enhance humidifier effectiveness
A humidifier is an important part of keeping your body and home healthy. It helps prevent illness and dry skin, reduces static electricity, and prevents cracks and drying in your woodwork, furniture, carpets and rugs.

Calcium and other mineral deposits reduce the effectiveness of humidifier pads, wicks or filters to evaporate moisture into the air. To prolong the life of your humidifier and prevent bacterial growth, replace these items annually, even if they appear to be fine.

Replace the burned out oven light bulb
Most ovens have an interior light, which are often very easy for the do-it-yourselfer to replace. The light bulb is usually behind a small glass dome near the upper left or right side of the inside of the oven. Remove the glass dome covering the bulb, usually by sliding a wire off of it, or rotating it counter clockwise, to replace the bulb. Find common bulbs in our range/stove/oven accessories section. For harder to find bulbs, use our PartDetective.
