Ice Maker

1. First, review the basics:  An ice maker is a small appliance that operates inside your freezer—usually independent of the other refrigerator systems.  The ice maker’s water comes from a valve at the back of the refrigerator, outside, toward the bottom.  Most ice makers last from 6 to 10 years.

2. Add on an ice maker:  Most refrigerators made in the past 20 years are wired to accommodate an add-on ice maker.  The best ice maker is the one designed for your particular refrigerator series.  An ice maker can produce a new batch of ice usually within 75 to 120 minutes—and the cloudy appearance of the ice is only due to entrapped air bubbles.

3.Make tasty ice cubes:  Household water can taste good to drink but may not make a tasty ice cube—until you add a water filter.  Water filters should be changed once or twice a year, depending on frequency of use.  Ice cubes can pick up refrigerator odors (e.g., from open food containers).  Empty and clean the ice cube bin occasionally and start again with a fresh batch of ice cubes.
