You hear a scream coming from the kitchen. You rush downstairs only to find Mom, obviously upset, maybe even about to hyperventilate, staring blankly at the oven. When you ask her what’s wrong, she frantically responds:
“Call our guests and tell them the house has burned down, so there will be no dinner. NO, no, no…on second thought, don’t call anyone; just get me a plane ticket – I’m catching the next flight to Cancun and changing my name…”
Wow! Something horrible must have happened. Eventually, Mom calms down and informs you that Thanksgiving is about to be ruined because the oven is broken. Okay, but wait a minute...
Since it’s still a few weeks ‘til Thanksgiving, maybe you can avoid this disaster by following these simple plan-ahead tips:

If your oven is self-cleaning, clean it at least 2-4 weeks before the holidays – maybe this week – which would allow you time to order parts or have repairs done if the oven breaks down. You’ll also appreciate being able to open a few windows to let the smell out before it’s too cold. |
| • |
Check your oven temperature. Purchase an oven thermometer, and preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes. Then record the highest and lowest temperatures for three cycles. If you have an oven that has a low temperature of 325˚ and a high of 375˚ when the dial is set at 350˚, then your oven is working properly. If the calibration is off by 25 degrees or more, you may have an oven control, thermostat or sensor problem, requiring replacement parts. See the repair help section of the website for more help. |

Inspect the cosmetics of your stove: Order new burner pans and other accessories before the holiday rush. New burner pans improve the efficiency of the burner by radiating more of the heat back to the cooking pan. |
