RepairClinic.com Outreach Helps in Fight Against Cancer at Canton Relay for Life Event

Canton, MI—May 20, 2010--RepairClinic.com Outreach was proud to be a Silver Level Sponsor of the 12th Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Canton, held at Heritage Park in Canton on May 15 and 16, where over 3000 supporters attended and contributed to raise money to fight cancer.  Local Relay teams set up a total of 76 tents, including the RepairClinic team.  The 24-hour-long event raised over $250,000 to support the Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer, as thousands of area residents rallied together.

Since several RepairClinic employees have battled cancer in recent years, The RepairClinic Outreach committee was especially interested in supporting the Relay. And because of the company’s kinship with do-it-yourselfers, the RepairClinic team deemed themselves “The Fix-it-Crew” focused on “fixing it for life” in the fight against cancer.  The RepairClinic tent was decorated with tool cutouts while participating employees donned tool belts and hardhats to complete the theme.  They sold hot dogs and drinks at their tent while other teams offered a variety of activities including: face painting, inflatable bouncers, jewelry, handbag and clothing sales, food sales (candy, popcorn, etc.), and more -- all to raise money for the American Cancer Society .  Throughout the day and evening, many RepairClinic employees did their part to help either as tent workers, walkers for the Relay, or as supporters of the event overall with spouses and kids in tow.

RepairClinic was pleased to be a part of another successful year where the Canton Relay not only maintained its reputation of success, but actually increased its numbers in several areas.  This year’s event celebrated 347 cancer survivors, raised $12,000 more than last year’s total, and increased the number of teams by 10 and the number of participants by 300 over last year.

The event began on Saturday with a moving Survivor Lap as cancer survivors made their way around the route, celebrating their victories.  A group of local restaurants and organizations shared in sponsoring a lovely luncheon for the Survivors during which many prizes and tributes were given. Then a wealth of talent and creativity turned Heritage Park into a carnival atmosphere of celebration, anticipation and fun as groups of dancers, singers, entertainers and food and craft vendors worked ‘round the clock to continue to raise money for the fight against cancer.

One of the hallmarks of this event is the luminary ceremony that takes place in the evening.  Paper bags are decorated by friends and family members of those who have lost their battle to cancer; then candles are placed inside the bags, and beautiful luminaries are created when the candles are lit at dusk.  The luminaries encircle the entire lake in the center of Heritage Park as a touching ceremony is led by those who have been touched by cancer. The event also sparks a great deal of interest from local youth whose involvement continues to grow every year. According to Kelsey Ruder from the American Cancer Society, “Besides the success we had in fundraising, I was amazed and thrilled by the amount of Youth from the PCEP, middle and elementary schools. We also were so pleased that our Event was reflective in terms of representing the diverse community that makes up the Canton area.”
