RepairClinic.com Outreach Takes a Stand Against Cancer at Canton Relay for Life Event

CANTON, MI - May 26, 2009 - RepairClinic.com Outreach was proud to be a Silver Level Sponsor of the 2009 Canton Relay for Life, held at Heritage Park in Canton on May 16 and 17, where 70 tents were set up by many Relay teams, including the RepairClinic team.  RepairClinic sold hot dogs and drinks at their tent while other teams offered a variety of activities including: face painting, inflatable bouncers, jewelry, handbag and clothing sales, food sales (hot dogs, candy, popcorn, etc.), and more --  all to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Throughout the day and evening, over 25 RepairClinic employees made an appearance either as tent workers, walkers for the Relay, or as supporters of the event overall with their spouses and kids in tow.

The event began on Saturday with a moving Survivor Lap including two RepairClinic employees who were proud to walk the lap as cancer survivors: Wilma Metcalf and Liliana Holtzman.  Outback Steakhouse provided a lovely luncheon for the Survivors during which many prizes and tributes were given. Then a wealth of talent and creativity turned Heritage Park into a carnival atmosphere of celebration, anticipation and fun as 66 teams, most with a representative tent, worked ‘round the clock to continue to raise money for the fight against cancer.

One of the hallmarks of this event is the luminaria ceremony that takes place in the evening.  Paper bags are decorated by friends and family members of those who have lost their battle to cancer; then candles are placed inside the bags, and beautiful luminaries are created when the candles are lit at dusk.  The luminaries encircle the entire lake in the center of Heritage Park as a touching ceremony is led by those who have been touched by cancer.

Relay for Life is a national event, held in many cities throughout the country.  The Canton event has won many awards, and this year, despite the difficult economy, Canton maintained its reputation of success with this event.  At the 2009 Canton Relay for Life event, Canton celebrated 225 cancer survivors, honored 3,780 battles with cancer during our luminaria ceremony, and with 66 teams, raised over $216,000!
