If the defrost drain freezes the drain strap may have fallen off or deteriorated. Although not common, some freezers are designed to have a small copper or aluminum strap which is attached to the defrost heater and extends partway down into the defrost drain. When the defrost heater turns on, some heat is conducted through the strap in order to melt away any ice that may have built up in the defrost drain. The drain strap should be in place to prevent the drain from freezing.
