If the reset button trips the shredding plate might be stuck or worn out. Use the disposer wrench (or a 1/4 inch Allen wrench) inserted into the bottom center of the disposer to wiggle the shredding plate back and forth. If the motor still hums after the plate is freed the disposer will need to be replaced.
If the reset button trips frequently it means that either the motor is defective or the motor bearings have worn out. In either case the disposer is not repairable and will need to be replaced.
