Briggs & Stratton Recalls Model 40 V-Twin Engine Due to Injury Hazard; Used on Sears, Husqvarna, Bad Boy Riding Mowers The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Briggs & Stratton Model 40 V-Twin Engine Units: About 50 Manufacturer: Briggs & Stratton Corporation, Milwaukee, Wis. Hazard: Wear on misrouted wiring may cause it to disconnect from the shut-off device, allowing the engine to continue running when the key is in the "OFF" position or when the operator gets off the seat while the mower is engaged, posing an injury hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: None reported Description: The recalled product is a Briggs & Stratton V-twin engine with the date code 100201Y. The engines can be found in the following lawn mowers: Craftsman, model 247:289810; Husqvarna, model 960460016; and Bad Boy, model BBM4826BS. The engine date code is bottom-most number located on the valve cover of the engine. The valve cover is located at the front of the engine near the oil dipstick. Sold by: Sears, under the Craftsman brand; The Home Depot, under the Husqvarna brand; and Tractor Supply Company, under the Bad Boy brand. The mowers were sold in February 2010 and March 2010 for between $1,500 and $3,500. Manufactured in: USA Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the riding mowers and contact a Briggs & Stratton Authorized Dealer for free inspection and repair. Consumers with affected Craftsman and Husqvarna models were notified by letter from Sears and Briggs & Stratton. Tractor Supply Company has not notified the purchasers of the affected Bad Boy models. Briggs & Stratton Snow Thrower Engines Recalled Due to Fire Hazard The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Briggs & Stratton OHV Snow Thrower Engines Units: About 480,000 Manufacturer: Briggs & Stratton Corp., of Wauwatosa, Wis. Hazard: When the engines are primed, excess fuel can overflow into the carburetor and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Briggs & Stratton has received 48 reports of fire. There have been no reports of injury. The firm has received one report of minor property damage. Description: The recall includes snow equipment with Briggs & Stratton OHV engines that have model numbers beginning with 12, 15, 20, or 21, and a date of manufacture (DOM) code between 000601xx and 070301xx. The engines were installed on the following brand snow throwers: Ariens, Canadiana, Craftsman, Frontier Equipment, Husqvarna, Poulan Pro, Simplicity and Snapper. The engine model number and DOM information are located on the cylinder shield or rocker cover. Call for more information about determining if your snow thrower engine is included in the recall. Sold at: Various snow thrower dealers nationwide from June 2000 through February 2007 for between $630 and $2,350 for the snow thrower. Generac Power Systems Inc. Recalls Engines to Replace Fuel Tanks Due to Risk of Fire The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Generac GTH410 and GTH220 Engines with Plastic Fuel Tanks Units: About 700 Manufacturer: Generac Power Systems Inc., of Waukesha, Wis. Hazard: The plastic fuel tanks can leak. If an ignition source is present, a fire or explosion can occur. Incidents/Injuries: Generac Power Systems Inc. has received 33 reports of fuel tank leaks with these engines. Generac has not received any reports of injuries or property damage. Description: The following industrial power equipment products, manufactured by the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) listed below are included in this recall:
The recalled Generac GTH410 and GTH220 engines were manufactured from July 2001 to July 2005. GTH410 Engines model numbers with defective fuel tanks are: 0041930EHF; 0043290EHF; 0043291; 0045050EHF; 0045281; 0045283; 0046100EHF; 0046150EHF; 0046910EHF; 0046911. GTH220 Engines model numbers with defective fuel tanks are: 0040990EHC; 0043930EHC; 0045300EHC; 0046090EHC; 0046370EHC; 0046380EHC; 0046390EHC; 0046820EHC; 0047640EHC; 0048820; 0050650; 0051170. The engine model number is located on the side of the motor and contained on a small sticker above the Generac nameplate. The top number on the small sticker is the model number (e.g., 220 or 410). The larger Generac nameplate contains the Engine Identification Number and Serial Number. Sold at: Independent and national dealers sold the power equipment with the recalled engines from July 2001 through July 2005. Manufactured In: United States Remedy: Consumers who purchased power equipment with the recalled engine should stop using it immediately and contact the equipment manufacturer to schedule a free tank replacement. Tecumseh Engines Used on Various Power Equipment Recalled Due to Fire HazardWASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the manufacturers of the brands named below, today announced voluntary recalls of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of Product: Tecumseh Engines used in various Two-Stage Snow Throwers, Ice Augers, Generators, Lawn Mowers, Weed Trimmers, Log Splitters and Fun-Karts. Units: About 170,000 engines used on various products Manufacturer: Tecumseh Power Co., Grafton, Wis. Hazard: The fuel line on these engines can become loose or disconnected, resulting in a fuel leak. This can pose a fire hazard to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: Tecumseh has received 235 reports of disconnected fuel lines, including two reports of a fire. There have been no reports of injury. The firm has received 39 reports of minor damage, totaling about $44,000. Description: The recall includes power equipment with Tecumseh engines listed below. The engine model number and date of manufacture (DOM) information is located on a label on the side of the housing. The recalled engines have a date of manufacture code (DOM) that starts with 05241 to 05286. The label on the engine reads, "Tecumseh Power Company," and in addition to the Model and DOM information, lists the Spec number needed for identification.
Sold at: Home and hardware stores and equipment dealers nationwide from September 2005 through January 2006 for between $200 and $2000. Remedy: Consumers should stop using their equipment until they receive a free inspection and possible repair if necessary. CPSC, Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. Announce Recall of Small Engines
PRODUCT: Gasoline-powered Small Engines - Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., of Irvine, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 45 engines that have been incorporated into Ventrac compact articulated tractors manufactured by Venture Products Inc. The recalled engines are 27 horsepower, liquid-cooled, overhead-valve (OHV), V-twin models with electric start and horizontal output shafts. The engine model and serial numbers are on a label at the top of the engines and next to the radiator cap:
PROBLEM: Vibration during operation can result in abrasion wear to the fuel tube, leading to a fuel leak. If the fuel leak comes in contact with a spark or flame, it can cause a fire and burn hazard. INCIDENTS/INJURIES: Kawasaki has received one report of fuel leakage, which resulted in a fire and burn injury to the operator. WHAT TO DO: Consumers should stop using the Kawasaki engine-equipped compact tractors immediately and contact the authorized dealer from whom the tractor was purchased for a free repair. The repair will consist of installing a new fuel tube with a protective cover, and a new clamp to hold the fuel tube in place. Consumers also can call a local authorized Kawasaki engine dealer to schedule the free repair. CPSC, Tecumseh Products Co. Announce Recall of Power Equipment Engines
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Tecumseh Products Co., Tecumseh, Mich., is voluntarily recalling about 25,000 engines used in various outdoor power equipment. A misrouted fuel line in the engine can become damaged, allowing gasoline to leak out, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Tecumseh has not received any reports of incidents. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. The recalled engines, which were manufactured in the United States, have model numbers HMSK 80 through 110 and HM 80 through 100, which can be found on the lower left side of the engine housing. The recalled engines also have a date of manufacture code (DOM) between 02175 and 02268 followed by the letter "C", which can be found on the engine identification decal. The HMSK models are 8 to 11 horsepower Snow King® snowthrower engines, while the HM models are 8 to 10 horsepower Utility engines. The power equipment, brand names, and retailers involved in this recall include:
Products equipped with the recalled engines were sold by retailers and dealers nationwide from June 2002 through November 2002. Sears, Roebuck & Co. distributed a limited quantity of these recalled products under its Craftsman brand name. Equipment owners will receive direct mail notice from Sears about this recall. Consumers should stop using the power equipment immediately and contact Tecumseh at (888) 271-4048 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to schedule a free engine repair. Consumers also can log on to the company's website at www.tecumsehpower.com. Engines that have a yellow dot painted on the fuel line have already been inspected or repaired and are not included in this recall. |

| Vanguard Engines and Fuel Filters Recalled by Briggs & Stratton PRODUCTS: Vanguard V-Twin Engines and Fuel Filters - Briggs & Stratton Corp., of Milwaukee, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 2,600 Vanguard V-twin gasoline engines with 9-quart fuel tanks. These engines were used in various brands of construction, industrial and lawn and garden equipment, including vacuum lawn sweepers, air compressors, leaf blowers and pressure washers. "VANGUARD V-Twin" is written on the engines, which are red or black. There are identification tags on the side of these engines with model number 294442, 294447, 303442, 303447, 350442 or 350447. Only engines with 9-quart fuel tanks manufactured by Briggs & Stratton are part of this recall. These tags also show an 8-digit code with the first six digits indicating the date the engine was manufactured by year, month and day. For example, 990215XX would indicate the engine was manufactured on February 15, 1999. The recalled engines were manufactured between February 15, 1999, and November 17, 1999. The engines were sold separately and to equipment manufacturers. Equipment containing these engines were sold nationwide from March 1999 through November 1999. The engines alone sold for about $1,200. In addition, about 4,600 clear, plastic fuel filters were sold separately as replacement parts for Vanguard engines with 9-quart fuel tanks. They have replacement part number 808116, which is written on the bottom of the filter. They were sold for use on these Vanguard V-twin engines manufactured on or after August 23, 1995, including all the model numbers of recalled engines listed above, and engines with model number 290442 or 290447. Briggs and Stratton distributors and dealers sold these fuel filters from March 1999 through November 1999 for about $5. PROBLEM: The fuel filters on these engines can leak gasoline, posing a fire hazard to consumers. INCIDENTS/INJURIES: Briggs & Stratton has received six reports of engine fires, one resulting in a minor burn injury. WHAT TO DO: Stop using these recalled Vanguard engines and fuel filters even if no leaks are detected. Briggs & Stratton will install a new fuel filter on the recalled engines free of charge, or provide a free replacement spare fuel filter.
