5 Tips to Tame Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator is the one appliance that everyone tends to use the most. Have your fridge working and looking its best with just a few easy maintenance tips:

  1. Clean the condenser coils
Condenser coils are what removes the heat from your refrigerator and freezer and they need to be clean to function properly. You’ll find the condenser coils either under or behind your fridge. The simplest way to remove any built-up dust or debris is by cleaning them with a long-handled bristle brush or a special attachment for your vacuum cleaner. Just check out your owner’s manual before you clean.
  2. Check the gasket
Your refrigerator’s gasket, or rubber door seal, can get grimy or damaged over time, which can let cold air out and warm air in. If it’s just dirty, clean it periodically with a universal cleaner. If it’s worn or damaged, you’ll want to replace it. Good news – this is an easy and affordable repair!
  3. Replace the water filter
Your fridge’s ice maker and water dispenser rely on water filters to keep everything tasting fresh. If it’s been a while since you’ve changed yours, now is the perfect time to do so. Ideally, you want to replace your water filter every six months.
  4. Wash the inside and outside
It doesn’t take long for a refrigerator to get dirty. Either use warm soapy water to clean it or an all-purpose cleaner to get the tougher stains and spills. If any of the fridge shelves or drawers are damaged, they’re simple to replace. Use soapy water or the all-purpose cleaner to clean the outside of the fridge as well. If you have a stainless steel refrigerator, you’ll want to use special wipes or spray cleaner to get them looking like new again. When you’re all done, you might want to put a deodorizer in the refrigerator, they can be up to 50 times more effective than the frequently-used baking soda.
  5. Be strategic when stocking the fridge
Most of us tend to put things where they’ll fit in the refrigerator without putting much thought on the ideal place to store them. Here are a few pointers to guide you:
    • Upper shelves – These have the most consistent temperature and are best for dairy products and leftovers.
    • Bottom shelf – This is usually the coldest part of the fridge and is a great place to keep meat or eggs. However, if you’re worried about cross-contamination from the meat, the bottom crisper drawer might be a better choice.
    • Crisper drawers – As most of us already do, thanks to the humidity, crisper drawers are a perfect for most fruits and vegetables.
    • Door – This is the warmest part of the fridge, so only keep items that will be used quickly or have a long shelf life here. And even though there’s an egg compartment, you’ll be better off keeping them in the carton on one of the inside shelves.
