This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the chain tensioner on Echo and Shindaiwa chainsaws. The most common reason for replacing the tensioner is when the chainsaw bar doesn’t adjust when you turn the tension screw and the tensioner, rather than the tension screw, the tension gear, or the adjustment bolt, is worn or damaged.

All of the information in this chain tensioner replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Echo, Shindaiwa

Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you replace the chain tensioner on your chainsaw first make sure the chainsaw’s engine has cooled.
2
Next, release the top cover clips and lift the cover off.
3
Remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the chainsaw from starting accidentally.
4
Now, remove the nuts securing the clutch cover.
5
Pull the cover off and set it on a sturdy surface.
6
Now remove the tension bracket screw and carefully lift the adjustment assembly out.
7
Remove the bracket and pull off the tension gear.
8
If still intact, note the approximate position of the old chain tensioner on the adjustment bolt then remove it.
9
Install the new chain tensioner by threading it onto the bolt to the approximate position of the old part.
10
Replace the tension gear by sliding it onto the square end of the bolt.
11
Realign the bracket and position the assembly in the cover.
12
Secure it with the screw.
13
To replace the cover, the chain tensioner will need to be inserted into the hole in the chain bar.
14
You will probably need to rotate the tension adjustment screw counter-clockwise to properly align the tensioner.
15
With the cover in place, hand-tighten the nuts.
16
Now lift the bar and rotate the adjustment screw clockwise until there is no slack in the chain.
17
Now fully tighten the nuts and confirm that the chain is taut.
18
Attach the wire and boot to the spark plug.
19
Realign the top cover and secure it with the clips.
