Step By Step Instructions

Before you replace the rewind spring on your chainsaw first make sure the chainsaw’s engine has cooled.

Next, release the top cover clips and lift the cover off.

Remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the chainsaw from starting accidentally.

Now, set the chainsaw on its side and remove the screws securing the recoil starter assembly.

Pull the starter assembly off and set it on a sturdy surface.

If the rewind spring is still intact, untie the knot securing the starter rope to the handle and remove the handle.

Now hold the recoil pulley and slowly release the tension on the spring.

Remove the starter assembly screw and pull off the starter cog and the soft start spring.

Use a flathead screwdriver to hold down the rewind spring retainer and lift the pulley off.

Very carefully remove the retainer and spring from the housing.

Be aware the spring can easily become dislodged and cause injury.

You’re now ready to install the new rewind spring assembly.

Align the assembly in the housing with the spring facing down.

Making sure the rope is secured in the notch replace the pulley and rotate it until the rewind spring catches onto the pulley tab.

Now rotate the pulley clockwise approximately four or five times to put tension on the spring.

While holding the pulley, replace the soft start spring and starter cog then secure the screw.

Release the end of the rope from the notch in the pulley and feed it through the hole in the starter housing.

Insert the end of the rope into the handle and tie a knot to secure.

Confirm that the recoil assembly rotates freely

Align the assembly on the main housing.

Replace the screws to secure.

Attach the wire and boot to the spark plug.

Realign the top cover and secure it with the clips.
