All of the information for this starter rope replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Echo Step-By-Step Instructions 1 Before you replace the starter rope on your chainsaw first make sure the chainsaw’s engine has cooled. 2 Next, release the top cover clips and lift the cover off. 3 Remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the chainsaw from starting accidentally. 4 Now, set the chainsaw on its side and remove the screws securing the recoil starter assembly. 5 Pull the starter assembly off and set it on a sturdy surface. 6 Untie the knot securing the starter rope to the handle and remove it from the handle. 7 Now hold the recoil pulley and slowly release the tension on the spring. 8 Remove the starter assembly screw and pull off the starter cog and the soft start spring. 9 Use a flathead screwdriver to hold down the rewind spring retainer as you lift the pulley off. 10 If still intact, unwind the old starter rope from the pulley and untie the knot at the end to release it. 11 Install the new starter rope by inserting one end through the hole in the pulley. 12 Tie a knot to secure it then wind the rope clockwise around the pulley. 13 Making sure the rope is secured in the notch replace the pulley and rotate it until the rewind spring catches onto the pulley tab. 14 Now rotate the pulley clockwise approximately four-to-five times to put tension on the spring. 15 While holding the pulley, replace the soft start spring and starter cog then secure the screw. 16 Release the end of the rope from the notch in the pulley and feed it through the hole in the starter housing. 17 Insert the end of the rope into the handle and tie a knot to secure. 18 Confirm that the recoil assembly rotates freely. 19 Align the assembly on the main housing. 20 Replace the screws to secure. 21 Attach the wire and boot to the spark plug. 22 Realign the top cover and secure it with the clips.
