This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the ratchet pawl on Kohler small engines, commonly found in Toro lawn mowers. The most common reason for replacing the ratchet pawl is when it has broken, causing there to be no resistance when you pull on the starter rope and the engine to not start.

All of the information in this ratchet pawl replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Kohler, Toro

Tools used: ratchet and socket, needle-nose pliers

Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you replace the ratchet pawls in the recoil starter assembly first make sure the engine has cooled.
2
Next, you should remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
3
Release the starter rope and handle from the rope guide.
4
Now remove the nuts securing the recoil starter to the engine.
5
Pull the starter off and set it on a sturdy surface.
6
Use a 10mm socket to remove the screw securing the drive plate and lift the plate off.
7
Be sure to hold the pulley in place to avoid dislodging the recoil spring and remove the old ratchet pawls if still intact.
8
Use pliers to pull out the old springs.
9
You’re now ready to install the new ratchet pawl kit.
10
Using pliers, insert the short end of the new springs into the small grooves in the pulley.
11
Now install the new ratchet pawls by positioning each pawl behind a spring as you insert the pawl into the slot.
12
Reposition the drive plate and secure it with the screw.
13
Reinstall the recoil starter by aligning it on the mounting posts then thread the nuts on to secure.
14
Hook the rope and handle onto the rope guide.
15
You’re now ready to reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug and confirm that the engine runs properly.
