All of the information in this thermoprotector replacement video is applicable to the following brands: GE, Hotpoint, RCA, Kenmore

Tools used: multi-screwdriver, Phillips head bit, putty knife, flat-head bit

Step By Step Instructions

1
Because of the high voltage and high current used by microwave ovens, be aware that repairing this appliance poses a substantial risk for injury or death if precautions are not taken.
2
You should always unplug the microwave before you attempt any disassembly.
3
To replace the cavity thermal protector in your microwave oven, you will need to uninstall the appliance.
4
To do this, first remove the screws on the bottom of the appliance to release the bottom panel.
5
Next, disconnect the wire connectors from the light sockets and detach the bottom panel completely.
6
Now, have an assistant support the microwave while you remove the mounting bolts from the upper cabinet.
7
Carefully tilt the microwave down and pull the power cord through the hole in the cabinet.
8
Now, lift the microwave off the rear mounting bracket and set it on a sturdy surface, resting on a towel or blanket.
9
Remove all the screws securing the cover.
10
Pull the cover back and off.
11
Since the high voltage capacitor may retain a charge even after the microwave has been unplugged, avoid contact with the capacitor when removing and replacing internal components.
12
Now, remove the screw securing the vent blower assembly.
13
Note the orientation of the blower outlets then disconnect the wire harness and remove the assembly.
14
Now remove the screw securing the grill.

17
Detach the mounting tabs.
18
Release the wires and power cord from the retaining tabs and move the air duct assembly out of the way.
19
You can now disconnect the wires from the old cavity thermal protector and remove the component from the retaining tabs.
20
Install the new cavity thermal protector by securing it under the retaining tabs then connect the wires to the component.
21
Secure the wires and power cord under the retaining tabs on the air duct assembly.
22
Reposition the assembly and secure it with the screws.
23
Reposition the grill slide it to the right and replace the screw to secure.
24
Properly reposition the vent blower assembly and replace the screw.
25
Reconnect the wire harness.
26
Reposition the cover by aligning the top edge first.
27
Then push the sides forward making sure the tabs on the frame slide into the slots on the sides of the cover.
28
Replace the screws to secure the cover.
29
Now carefully reposition the microwave on the mounting bracket by hooking the back edge of the appliance on the bracket tabs.
30
Insert the power cord through the hole in the upper cabinet.
31
Lift the microwave up and secure the mounting bolts.
32
Reattach the bottom panel.
33
