This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the ratchet pawl on Echo leaf blowers. The most common reason for replacing the ratchet pawl is when it has broken, causing there to be no resistance when you pull on the starter rope and the engine to not start.

All of the information in this ratchet pawl replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Echo, Mantis, Shindaiwa

Tools used: T25 Torx bit screwdriver, flat-head screwdriver

Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you replace the ratchet pawl in your leaf blower make sure the engine has cooled and the on-off switch is in the “off” position.
2
Use a t-25 torx bit screwdriver to unthread the screws securing the fuel tank support plate.
3
Pull the plate off then remove the top screws securing the recoil starter.
4
Pull the starter free.
5
Now use a large flat-head screwdriver to help pry out the old ratchet pawl, if still intact.
6
Prepare the new ratchet pawl for installation by transferring the spring from the old pawl to the new one.
7
Now hold the spring tight against the new pawl as you insert the pawl into the holder.
8
Reposition the recoil starter on the engine housing.
9
Rethread and tighten the screws at the top.
10
Realign the support plate and secure it with the screws.
11
With the repair completed turn the on-off switch to the “on” position and your leaf blower should be ready for use.
