Step By Step Instructions

To replace the fan motor in your central air condensing unit first shut off the power to the unit.

You can do this by removing the fuses from the disconnect box or switching off the circuit breaker.

Use a quarter inch socket or nut driver to unthread the two bottom screws securing the access panel.

Pull the panel down to remove.

To ensure the run capacitor is discharged, place a screwdriver with an insulated handle across both sets of terminals – avoid touching the screwdriver blade.

Cut the zip tie securing the wires.

Disconnect the fan motor wires from the contactor.

Next, unthread the screws securing the top cover.

Lift up the top cover disconnect the fan motor wire from the capacitor and set the cover and fan motor assembly on a towel or blanket.

Note the position of the fan blade on the motor shaft then use an adjustable wrench to loosen the set screw.

Lift off the fan blade – this may require some effort.

Turn the cover over and use a 7/16th inch socket to unthread the nuts securing the fan motor mounting posts.

Remove the old motor.

Rotate the wire conduit clockwise to detach and slide the conduit off of the wires.

Prepare the new fan motor for installation by sliding the conduit over the wires then attach it to the motor by rotating the conduit counter-clockwise.

We recommend using zip ties to bind the wires together.

Insert the wires and conduit into the shroud.

Position the motor posts in the cover then thread and tighten the nuts to secure.

Install the fan blade by positioning it on the motor shaft with the set screw aligned with the flat side of the shaft. then tighten the set screw to secure.

Return the assembly to the condensing unit and connect the appropriate wire to the capacitor.

Make sure the motor wires are aligned with the notch in the housing then fully reposition the top cover.

Rethread the screws to secure.

Connect the motor wires to the appropriate terminals contactor.

Use a zip tie to secure the wires.

Slide the upper edge of the access panel under the top cover then thread and tighten the screws to secure.

With the repair completed, restore power to the condensing unit and your central air system should be ready for use.
