This video provides step-by-step repair instructions for replacing the chute gear on an Ariens snowblower. The most common reason for replacing the chute gear is when the chute won’t adjust or move.

Before beginning this procedure, be sure to remove the snowblower’s start key from the engine.
To replace the snowblower’s chute gear, your first step is to remove the cotter pin to release the chute crank rod from the pinion gear.
Next, remove the screws securing the gear cover and pull the cover off.
Remove the screws to release the pinion gear bracket.
Now use a 9/16th inch socket to remove the nut from the bolt securing the chute gear.
Remove the hardware, pull out the bolt to release the old chute gear and replace the bolt to hold the chute in place.
Install the new chute gear by first repositioning the chute on the upper washers and pedestal then align the new gear.
Insert the bolt and replace the lower washer, friction plate and spring.
Secure the hardware with the nut.
Align the pinion gear bracket with the pedestal and secure it with the screws.
Replace the gear cover and secure the screws.
Realign the crank rod with the pinion gear and secure it with the cotter pin.
With the new chute gear installed you can now return the start key to the snowblower’s engine.
