Why is my air conditioner making noise?

Your air conditioner makes a steady, even sound. You can get so used to it you don’t even notice it’s on. Except when it starts to make a weird noise, like a buzzing, banging, clanking or screaming. Then it’s not only alarming, it might be dangerous. So even though it’s tempting to ignore it and hope it goes away, that’s not a good idea. There are many reasons why your AC could be making noise, some easier to fix than others. Something may have fallen – or climbed – into it. A fan blade or two may have broken. The compressor may be loose. But if your air conditioner sounds like it’s screaming, turn it off right away. It might be a refrigerant leak or high internal pressure, and you’ll want to call a technician for that. For everything else, check out Repair Clinic’s step-by-step repair directions. We even have videos and articles to help you, and affordable parts once you know what you need.
