Champion Spark Plug (RC12YC). The spark plug ignites the fuel and air mixture in the cylinder to power the engine. If the spark plug is burnt, fouled or damaged the engine may not start or may run rough.

Small engine primer bulb. The primer bulb draws additional fuel into the carburetor to help start the engine.

Kawasaki pump-priming bulb. Fits select Kawasaki FJ180V engines.

Tecumseh carburetor repair kit. If the carburetor is clogged, the engine won't get enough fuel. As a result, the engine may not start or may run poorly.

Honda air cleaner (or air filter). If the air filter is clogged or dirty, the engine may not start or may run rough.

Briggs & Stratton Original Equipment 491588S Air Filter. Briggs & Stratton genuine parts are specially designed to exact OEM standards, manufactured and tested to help deliver optimum performance in Briggs & Stratton engines.

Briggs & Stratton Original Equipment 498260 Carburetor Overhaul Kit. If the carburetor is clogged, the engine won't get enough fuel. As a result, the engine may not start or may run poorly.

Carburetor gasket (Choke Side)

NGK spark plug. The spark plug ignites the fuel and air mixture in the cylinder to power the engine. If the spark plug is burnt, fouled or damaged the engine may not start or may run rough.

Fuel bowl gasket

Primer bulb. The primer bulb draws fuel into the carburetor to make the engine easier to start.

Small engine Champion spark plug (RJ19LM). If the engine does not start, the spark plug may be defective. The spark plug should be replaced periodically during regular maintenance.

Element, air cleaner

Tecumseh ignition coil (also called a lamination). The ignition coil sends voltage to the spark plug while the engine is running. If the ignition coil is defective, the engine may not start.

Small engine recoil starter assembly. This item includes the pulley and spring. The recoil starter engages the drive cup on the flywheel to start the engine when pulled.
Small engine failures -- hard starts, rough running, and complete shutdowns -- almost always trace back to one of a handful of worn parts. Whether your Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki, or Tecumseh engine powers a lawn mower, string trimmer, chainsaw, or generator, the fix is usually simple and inexpensive when you have the right OEM part.
The most common culprits are carburetors clogged by ethanol-damaged fuel, worn spark plugs, kinked fuel lines, and cracked primer bulbs. Many of these parts cost under $30, and replacing them yourself takes 15 minutes with basic hand tools. Always reference your engine's model number (stamped on the engine block itself, not the equipment model) to ensure exact fit -- small engine parts vary significantly across manufacturers and displacement sizes.
Your equipment (mower, trimmer, generator) has its own model number, but the small engine inside has a separate one stamped directly on the engine block or shroud. Small engine parts are matched to the engine model number, not the equipment brand. A Craftsman mower might have a Briggs & Stratton engine, for example. Always look on the engine itself -- you'll see "Briggs & Stratton" or the manufacturer name plus a model and spec number. That's what you need for parts.
Ethanol-blended fuel breaks down and varnishes carburetors. The tiny fuel passages in the carb get clogged, and the engine won't start. The best fix is a carburetor rebuild kit (jets, float needle, gaskets) for $15 -- 30, which takes 30 minutes to install. For next season, drain fuel from your equipment before storage or add a fuel stabilizer to keep the carb clean.
Aftermarket plugs often work, but OEM spark plugs (Champion, NGK, Autolite) are engineered for your engine's exact heat range and gap. Wrong heat range causes fouling or engine knock. For reliability, especially on newer engines, stick with the OEM spec listed in your manual.
Primer bulbs crack from UV exposure and age. They're cheap (under $5) and wear out faster than most parts. Keep a spare in your equipment bag so you're never stranded with a hard-starting engine. Replace immediately when you feel the bulb harden or see cracks.
